LYÔBÂLE

LYÔBÂLE, ALPHORN POETRY ON THE RHINE LYÔBÀLE has set itself the goal of filling the air above the Rhine in Basel with the sounds of the alphorn for 30 minutes once a year, to the delight and joy of the people. To this end, groups of Rhine alphorn players gather on both banks of the Rhine, while soloists perform on the ferry. This marks the sixth edition of the event. It originated at a time when, due to the pandemic, cultural events were largely prohibited. Our message is that these sounds, carried by the flow of the Rhine, will carry this quintessentially Swiss music out into the world and bring joy to everyone who hears it. This open-air alphorn concert—the only one of its kind in the world—is also a gathering of musicians from near and far. They come from the Stuttgart area, Lake Geneva, France, and Ticino, and of course from the Northwest Switzerland region as well. With their impressive ensemble of nearly 100 alphorns, they make hearts soar. Their repertoire consists of compositions written specifically for the Lyôbâle event. Renowned composers from the alphorn music scene have composed pieces especially for this unique setting—including Robert Scotton, Olivier Brisville, Willy Jaques, Gaby Laetsch, Martin Roos, and, for this year, Andreas Frey from Berlin.
